HYROX 2026/27 Season: Everything That's Changed

If you follow HYROX on Instagram, you’ve watched the 2026/27 announcement drip out in pieces over the past week. Rulebook update. New division. New qualifying system. Adaptive divisions expanded. All of it good, except now the story is scattered across a dozen carousels and no one has time to piece it together between sessions.

We’ve done it for you.

Challenger Division: 16th place isn’t the end anymore

This one’s a big deal. Especially if you’ve ever crossed a finish line in the top 20 at a Major and felt the entire season disappear in about four seconds.

Because that’s exactly what it used to be. Sixteenth place, same as thirtieth. Try again, start again, race well again, hope again.

The new Challenger Division changes that.

It sits directly below the Elite Series and covers ranks 16 to 30. Elite Series and Challenger race on the same days, at the same venues, for both Singles and Doubles.

The kicker: win the Challenger Division and you claim a spot in the next Elite Series race.

That’s the difference between a hard 16th place and a live route back in. Consistency counts now. Just missing out is no longer just missing out.

Majors are dead. Long live Elite Series.

The Majors label is gone. What was previously called Majors is now the Elite Series.

Same top-15 structure. Same qualification purpose. Top 3 from each Elite Series race book their spot at Worlds direct.

The rename pairs with the new Challenger Division so the whole competitive tier reads as one clear system, not a mash-up of names from three different eras.

Points, not placements

Here’s where it gets interesting. Getting into the Elite Series is now a points game, not a single-race game.

To be in the running at all:

Every race earns points. The number depends on where you finish and how strong the field was. A win at a stacked race is worth more than a win at a smaller one.

Which is HYROX’s way of saying: don’t cherry-pick soft events. Show up where the top athletes are, and race them.

The leaderboard runs on a rolling 365-day window from the cut-off date.

That last one is new. And it’s going to be awkward for a lot of partnerships.

If you’ve been racing Doubles with your training partner from across the border, that partnership no longer counts toward Elite Series qualification. Same-nationality only. Which means some of you have some conversations to have.

Full points detail sits on hyrox.com/elite-15-qualification.

Age Group qualification: guaranteed slots, tight windows

If you’re not chasing Elite Series but you still want a crack at Worlds 2027, the AG pathway is now properly structured.

Every PRO and Doubles Mixed Age Group gets at least one Worlds slot per event. Not a maybe. A guaranteed slot per AG, every race.

Then the clock starts.

Miss the window and the slot rolls down.

Rolldown rules to know:

That last one gives Doubles athletes a bit of flexibility. Partner drops out, want to enter with someone new, you can. Once per season.

Rulebook updates: relearn some habits

Five changes. Some clarifications. Some enforcement changes with penalties attached. All of them will catch someone out at every event this season.

Burpee Broad Jumps: the 5cm rule

This is the one that’s going to get people.

Especially anyone who’s been staggering their stance because a proper two-foot take-off feels absolutely brutal on Run 4 legs.

Take-off and landing now require overlapping feet. Neither foot completely in front of the other. The specific standard: no more than 5cm difference between the tips of your toes.

Natural jumping motion, fine. Full split stance, no-rep. Little shuffle to reposition before take-off, also no-rep.

If you’ve been getting away with a staggered stance to spare your quads, that’s done. Start drilling the strict version in training now, before you find out on race day.

Sandbag Lunges: +15 seconds per infringement

The sandbag has to stay on you. All of it. All the time.

Each infringement adds 15 seconds to your time.

That’s not a small hit. In a competitive AG race, 15 seconds is a full lap of pacing difference. Two infringements and your PB isn’t the number you thought it was.

Drill the carry position in training. Learn where the sandbag sits, learn the reset that doesn’t touch the floor, and don’t find out on race day that you’ve been racking up penalties for a season.

Rowing: stay seated until confirmed

Stay on the rower until all 1,000m are done and confirmed by the judge.

Allowed: pausing, returning the handle, taking your feet off the plates while seated.

Not allowed: standing up, leaving the seat, dismounting before the judge says you’re done.

Sit tight for a beat after your final pull. The clock keeps running while you wait for confirmation, which is annoying. But not as annoying as a no-rep with a full run left to go.

SkiErg: dynamic and jumping techniques allowed

Feet can leave the base plate. Dynamic and jumping ski techniques are officially in.

If you’ve been full-sending it and half-lifting off, you’re within the rules now.

One line you can’t cross: your feet can’t touch the floor at any point before the station is complete. So all the drive, all the pop, all the whatever gets you moving. Just don’t step down.

Overtaking: officially allowed on three stations

You can now safely overtake during Sandbag Lunges, Burpee Broad Jumps and Farmer’s Carry.

Which is a relief for anyone who’s ever been stuck behind someone shuffling a sandbag down the lane at 3km/h with a growing queue behind them.

Adaptive divisions: five new classifications

HYROX has updated the Adaptive language, classifications and functional descriptions. Five divisions are now recognised:

Full details are in the updated Adaptive Rulebook on hyrox.com. If your current registration no longer aligns with the new classifications, contact HYROX for a review.

New cities, more races, more points on the table

The 2026/27 calendar has expanded. New host cities across the season, more events on the schedule, more chances to earn points if you’re playing the Elite Series game.

The full list updates as HYROX confirms events, so rather than list dates here that go stale by Tuesday, the live race finder lives at hyrox.com/find-my-race.

What to actually do about all this

If you’re chasing an Elite Series spot, plan around the Doubles nationality rule and the 365-day window now. Not in September.

If you’re racing Age Group, check the details on your registration are right. Autocorrect isn’t your friend when a Worlds slot is sitting unopened in your inbox.

If you’re racing at all, drill the new Burpee Broad Jumps stance and the Sandbag Lunges carry standard. Both are +15 second penalties that are going to catch someone out at every event this season.

Better it’s not you.
